Me Talk Pretty One Day is a bestselling collection of essays written by American humorist David Sedaris, and the title of the first essay in the collection. This text, which is one of several that explores his recent move to Paris, narrates the difficulties that Sedaris faced while learning French and inspired the design of both editions (paperback and hardcover) released by its publisher Little Brown.
This redesign is no exception. However, instead of using classical French protraiture to represent the setting or a blackboard to reference a classroom, this design opts for a purely typographic solution. The juxtaposition of a sharp English “Me” and a distorted French “Moi” — from front cover to back cover and through the spine — reflects Sedaris’s struggle to pick up the new language, while the blue, white, and red nod to the French flag.
